Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
